Dogs are instinctively curious. Most of the time, it’s natural to surrender to their demands and offer them food that is not suitable for them. Many of us know that chocolate and salt are harmful to a dog’s health. However, there’s little information about pretzels. 

Pretzels are small crisps, usually shaped into a knot. They are delightful, and a favored snack for most. They have a high salt content, which is not good for our furry friends. As a whole, salt is a dangerous thing to offer dogs?

Pretzels are not suitable for dogs, though they are not poisonous, either.  The problem isn’t the pretzel itself; it’s the salt. Feeding salty food to your pet is ABSOLUTELY not recommended

As with most snacks that people scoff down, there are hardly any health benefits in them. The main problem with pretzels is that it has a lot of salt and carbohydrates. 

High salt intake isn’t recommended for canines. Dogs may vomit soon after tasting pretzels because of their high sodium content. 

At times, they may even urinate trying to remove the salt from their blood. This can lead to dehydration, which harms brain cells because of insufficient water in the body. Symptoms include headache, dizziness, and convulsions. To be safe, remember that dogs should not eat Pretzels or anything else with salt.

Other than being filled with sodium, Pretzels may likewise be coated with onions or garlic. These can cause blood poisoning and gastrointestinal disorders. This snack can also be made with savory or sweet coatings that are not good for your dog, as well. 

Additionally, sweet pretzels can have Xylitol. This is an artificial sweetener which can cause an unexpected and severe drop in blood sugar levels in dogs. Raisin, which, is usually included for flavoring, may harm your dog as well.  

Any flavored pretzel may be unsafe for dogs to have as it contains harmful ingredients. Here are the most dangerous ingredients to be wary of.

  • Buffalo sauce
  • Chocolates
  • Chilis
  • Garlic and Onions
  • Jalapenos
  • Nutmeg
  • Poppy seeds
  • Raisins or Sultanas 

Unsalted pretzels are better than salted ones. However, they are still not recommended as they provide little to no nourishments.

Are Pretzels Bad For Dogs?

Pretzels aren’t certainly “bad” for pups, though they’re unquestionably not recommended, as well. 

Pretzels don’t have a considerable amount of nutritional value for your dog.  Basically, pretzels are bread that is typically smeared with salt. 

It is most people’s favorite snack, though dogs should not consume pretzels at all. They only add empty calories and no nutritional value whatsoever.

Dogs should not eat pretzels. But, if you have the urge to feed them, make sure it’s a small, hard unsalted pretzel, and stick to one portion a day

Buying pretzels with low sodium is more beneficial for us, and the same goes for our dogs. Even so, removing the grains of salt is more convenient to make the snack more edible for your pet. 

If you notice that your dog has torn through several pretzels, the first thing you must do is give them water to drink.

Call your vet if you see some abrupt changes in your pet’s diet, toilet habits, and behavior. 

Seizures, diarrhea, vomiting, an increase in body heat, depression, urination, and excessive thirst are some signs that your dog has consumed too much sodium.

It is not wise to give your dogs pretzels, even though they can eat them in moderation. Pretzels aren’t significantly lethal to dogs or dangerous for them; however, they are not beneficial.
