Are Cheetos Harmful to Dogs?

Cheetos can be harmful to dogs, regardless of whether you offer it as a treat, or include it in their diet.

Saturated Fat

Along with having no health benefits, Cheetos also have a high amount of saturated fat. This is even more dangerous for dogs, as they cannot digest them like we do.

It can cause your dog to be overweight and result in more severe health problems. These include pancreatitis and diabetes, both of which can lead to death if left unchecked.

High Salt Content

Since Cheetos have high salt content, they are not a great snack option for dogs. Pets have an extremely low salt tolerance. Having too much sodium (salt) can lead to hypertension, heart problems, and stroke.

Additionally, an overdose can cause hypernatremia, which in turn could trigger vomiting, dehydration, seizures, and fatigue. If your pet is diagnosed with hypernatremia, he/she may require emergency veterinary action.

Artificial Ingredients

Cheetos contain artificial flavorings and colorings that can give your dog a case of diarrhea and other digestive problems.

The Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) presence in these snacks, even in small measures, can double your dog’s insulin levels. This makes it challenging for your dog to shed some pounds regardless of the amount of exercise he gets.

MSG is used to enhance taste in various foods and is present in most human foods.

These could be symptoms of anemia that can be associated with toxicity.

Cheetos are very high in saturated fats and sodium (salt). If your dog ingested too much Cheetos, he would manifest symptoms like:

  • Vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Gastrointestinal pain
  • Diarrhea
  • High fever
  • Loss of appetite

The effect of onion and garlic powder may take several days to manifest. Because of this, you must observe your dog for a minimum of two weeks.

If gastrointestinal issues persist longer than a day, it might mean that your dog is coming down with a medical issue.

You must bring him to your veterinarian at once if such signs start to show. Better yet, as soon as you see your dog eating Cheetos, you can immediately contact the vet to eliminate the side effects.

Please ensure that your dog has lots of water beside him. Also make sure he is warm and comfortable before bringing him to the vet. Call a cab so that you can stay at your dog’s side. You’ll be able to give him comfort while assuring him that he’ll be okay.
